Everything you need to know about Eternal Vault
Get quick answers to the most common questions about digital legacy protection, security, and how our platform works.
Security & Privacy
How secure is my data and how does encryption work?
Your data security is our highest priority. Here's how our encryption and security works:
- Device-generated passphrase: Your unique master passphrase is generated on your device during onboarding and never leaves it.
- AES-256 encryption: All documents are encrypted using military-grade encryption before leaving your device.
- Zero-knowledge architecture: We never see your actual data - only encrypted versions that we cannot decrypt.
- Secure key derivation: Your encryption key is derived using Scrypt, making brute-force attacks impractical.
- No recovery backdoors: Even we cannot decrypt your data without your passphrase - this is by design.
This means even if our servers were compromised, your data would remain completely secure and unreadable without your master passphrase.
Do Eternal Vault employees know my master passphrase?
No, absolutely not. Your master passphrase remains with you and it is your responsibility to store it securely somewhere:
- Your master passphrase is generated on your device and never leaves it.
- We only store encrypted versions of your data that we cannot decrypt.
- Your encryption key is derived from your passphrase and never sent to us.
- Even our engineers and support staff cannot access your master passphrase or content.
This means you have complete privacy - only you and the people you explicitly share with can ever access your data. It's your responsibility to keep your master passphrase safe and secure.
What happens if I lose my master passphrase?
Your master passphrase is the key to your encryption - if you lose it, even we cannot recover your data. This is the fundamental principle of end-to-end encryption that our system is built upon.
Critical importance: Since your passphrase never leaves your device and we never have access to it directly, there is absolutely no way for us to recover your data if you lose it. This ensures maximum security but also means you must:
- Write it down securely: Store your master passphrase in a secure physical location
- Use a password manager: Save it in a trusted password manager
- Create multiple secure backups: Keep copies in different secure locations
- Share with trusted contacts: Consider sharing with your most trusted family members (just in case).
Remember: The security of your digital legacy depends entirely on keeping your master passphrase safe. We cannot help you recover it - this is by design to ensure your complete privacy and security.
Who can access my vault and when?
You have complete control over who can access your vault:
- While you're active: Only you can access your vault
- During emergencies: Only contacts you've specifically designated with the appropriate trust levels
- Trust levels: Ultimate (immediate access), High (needs one approval), Shared (needs group consensus)
Your vault is never shared without multiple safeguards and your explicit pre-authorization.
How It Works
How does the heartbeat monitoring work?
Our heartbeat system is designed to be non aggressive while ensuring your vault is shared when needed.
- Regular check-ins: You can set a periodic schedule to check-in with the heartbeat system as per your choice, either manually or automatically through our integrations.
- Grace periods: Multiple reminders before any action is taken. This applies to both warning and critical states.
- False alarm protection: Easy to respond and reset if you were simply away by sending a check-in.
The system only triggers after multiple failed check-ins and grace periods, ensuring accuracy.
It was a false alarm, how do I lock my vault again?
After you cross your grace period, you can still lock your vault again if it was a false alarm.
You just have to simply log in to the system and send a check-in (or send a check-in via our integrations that you have set up) and your vault will be locked again.
Please note that it is advised that you set your thresholds according to your needs so you don't have accidental vault opens happening frequently.
What types of files and documents can I store?
You can store virtually any type of digital content:
- Documents: PDFs, Word docs, legal papers, financial records.
- Photos & Memories: Family photos and memories that you want to share with your loved ones.
- Text notes: Passwords, instructions, personal, etc.
- Financial information: Account details, Bank accounts information, your investments, etc.
- Digital assets: Domain names, software licenses, digital art, etc.
There is a 20000000 byte file size limit.
Family & Contacts
How do I add trusted contacts to my vault?
Adding trusted contacts is straightforward:
- Invite by email: Send secure invitations to family and friends
- Set trust levels: Choose Ultimate, High, or Shared trust for each contact
- Verification required: Contacts must verify their identity before gaining access
You can modify or revoke access at any time, giving you complete control.
Can I change who has access to my vault later?
Absolutely! Your vault access controls are completely flexible:
- Add new contacts: Invite additional trusted people at any time
- Remove access: Revoke access for people no longer in your life
- Change trust levels: Upgrade or downgrade someone's access level
Life changes, and your digital legacy plan should be able to change with it.
